Each time a road is mentioned in a conversation, essential service comes to mind; in any circumstance, development can be taken to a locality where there is a good road network. Affirmative views assent; a good road network is a precondition for uninterrupted services in this day and age.

A well-maintained road connects people to opportunities, solutions, and livelihoods. In some cases, it bonds communities and promotes freedom of movement as a human right. A lot could go wrong when a road’s condition is terrible. It could pose threats to safety, livelihoods, and even destinies. Chances are, a whole community could even starve of essential services such as access to health facilities, schools, markets, and other social amenities. Such was the dilemma of the residents of Mamboima, Mangihun, and Kassama communities in the Tikonko chiefdom, Bo district.

The feeder road rehabilitation project is fully funded by the Government of Sierra Leone, through the Road Maintenance Fund Administration (RMFA).

Over time, Residents of these communities, mostly farmers, found it very hard to take their products to the markets, pregnant women skipped prenatal clinic appointments due to fear of driving the route, and even children would miss school. “It was sad for the whole community. The condition of the road was horrible. The fragile soil became slippery after every precipitation, which could result in accidents or injuries sometimes. And is made worse in the torrential rains.

The overall goal of rehabilitating road is to improve access to maternal and child infant health, safe travelling, improve in Free Quality Education, increase the socio-economic activities in the community by improving access to safe travelling and reduce the use of alternative means of transporting goods and passengers in local boat (canoe), hammock or walk on foot.

Baby Kallon, a Subsistence farmer, recounted her plight: “Before the rehabilitation of this road, we had to face lots of constraints to take our products to the markets, and that can be made worse when there is fuel scarcity as Bike Riders soar their prices. The burden becomes heavy on us. We are left with no option but to sell our products at higher prices to realize profit”. She narrated.
