Welcome to Bo District District Council

The Bo District Council is one of the 22 Local Councils established in the country by the Local Government Act 2004, as amended in 2022. It provides the legal framework for their establishment, powers, and functions.

It is co-located with the Bo City Council and is bounded in the North by Tonkolili District, to the west by Moyamba District, to the Southwest and South by Bonthe and Pujehun Districts, and to the East by Kenema District. The district is ethnically diverse, having the Mende as the dominant tribe in the district.

The district has an area of 5,165 km2, with a current projected population of about 612,898 (projected based on Sierra Leone Housing and Population Census 2015). The district hosts the second largest capital city of Sierra Leone. It is located in the Southern region of Sierra Leone, the largest of the four administrative districts in the Region. The district consists of sixteen (16) chiefdoms namely: Kakua, Tikonko, Lugbu, Jaiama, Bongor, Baoma, Badjai, Bagbwe, Bumpe Ngao, Komboya, Selenga, Niawa-Lenga, Gbo, Valunia, Wonde, and Bagbo.

The council support education

Bo District secured a €500,000 EU grant for a two-year project to build a WASH facility and a 50-bed student hostel at Towama, Njala University.
